For a long time, ERP modernisation was viewed as a purely technological issue. But anyone speaking to organisations today will notice that the focus is shifting. It is no longer about more functionality, but about a solid and reliable foundation. As Marco Alewijnse, Chief Commercial Officer at Dynamic People, aptly puts it: “Above all, companies are looking for peace of mind when it comes to their systems.” And with good reason. In a world of rapid change, complex supply chains and AI-driven decision-making, outdated ERP systems are increasingly becoming the bottleneck. In this blog, you can read why modernisation should be high on the agenda right now and what concrete benefits it brings to organisations.
Many mid-market companies operate with an IT landscape that has evolved over the years. Mergers, new business activities and customer requirements have led to multiple ERP systems, standalone applications and bespoke solutions.
Whereas bespoke solutions once seemed necessary to support processes, there is now a growing realisation that they often simply add complexity. That is why companies are increasingly striving for a simpler application landscape, based on standardisation. “Better a process that has already proven itself a hundred times over than a unique solution that remains difficult to maintain and hampers the organisation’s agility,” notes Marco.”
“ERP modernisation is not a trend, but a necessary step towards maturity.
Research by Forrester into companies modernising their ERP systems with Microsoft Dynamics 365 shows that this trend is becoming more widespread. The study reveals that organisations making the switch not only operate more efficiently, but also recoup their investment relatively quickly, with an average ROI of over 100 per cent and a payback period of sixteen months.
“Those figures are interesting, but they only tell part of the story,” says Marco. “Companies aren’t modernising primarily to save costs, but because their current landscape simply no longer keeps pace with the speed at which their business is changing.”
In addition to simplification, predictability is becoming increasingly important. In sectors such as trade, wholesale and distribution, financial services and professional services, the ability to identify issues in good time and look ahead provides a direct competitive advantage. Modern ERP systems help to identify anomalies at an early stage and provide insight into risks. “Companies don’t want to see in reports after the event where things have gone wrong, but to take immediate corrective action the moment something happens,” says Marco. This is also changing the role of Microsoft 365 ERP implementation partners, who are increasingly shifting towards consultancy and continuous optimisation.
“AI can only add value if the data is in order. That makes the quality of the underlying ERP system more important than ever.”
Many organisations want to experiment with smart applications, but they soon come to the same conclusion: without reliable data, AI simply doesn’t work properly. This makes the quality of the underlying ERP system more important than ever. “AI can only add value when the data is in order,” says Marco. “If the foundations aren’t right, technology actually exacerbates the problems you already had.” That is why many organisations see ERP modernisation as a necessary step before new technologies can deliver real value.
Companies are looking for a foundation that adapts to the organisation, provides reliable data and keeps processes clear and organised. At Dynamic People, this forms the core of our Headstart approach. By working with proven standards and in-depth market knowledge, we deliver implementations that not only go live faster, but above all provide immediate stability and clarity. No unnecessary complexity, just a stable starting point for sustainable growth.
